The Garmin dezl OTR700 is one of the latest GPS truck navigators to hit online store shelves. The 7-inch display retails for $399.99. For $499,99, you can get the 7-inch touchscreen navigator with a built-in dashcam. We set out to find out everything there is to know about the OTR700, including key features, pros, and cons.
Installation and Setup
The 7-inch navigation screen features powered magnetic mounts that keep it in place during even the bumpiest of rides. The tablet-like device measures 6.97 inches in width, 4.17 inches in height, and 0.75 inches in diameter. There is a power cable port on the back of the device. This feeds directly into your vehicle’s cigarette lighter outlet. It should remain plugged in for the entire duration of your route, as the battery only lasts for 2 hours on a full charge.
As soon as you plug in your Garmin, you will be asked to answer a few questions about your preferred language, your vehicle, your load, and any potentially hazardous materials you have onboard. Once these prompts are answered, you will be brought to a screen with “Where To?” and “View Map” icons. Below these icons is a small menu bar with several prompts, including “Stop,” “Trip History,” “Apps,” Volume,” and “Settings.” You’ll also notice that there are Wi-Fi signal status, Bluetooth status, clock, and battery status icons positioned at the top of the screen.
Once you set a route, you will be asked whether or not you would like to save your driving history.
The Garmin dezl OTR700 contains a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that promises up to 2 hours of battery life per charge. We recommend that you keep this device plugged in at all times to ensure that you always have enough battery power to get you to your final destination. =
The touchscreen display is easy on the eyes. The tablet-like device features high-contrast imagery and easy-to-navigate menus. The screen is bright enough that the display is not obscured in bright conditions. A dimmable brightness setting ensures that you never have to strain your eyes to get a good look at the road ahead.
The split-screen display includes pertinent route highlights, including your traveling speed, the current speed limit, your driving direction, the distance until your next turn, the road you’re on, and your arrival time. On devices with built-in cameras, the screen is split, with a map on the left and a dashcam view on the right.
You can click on the bottom bar to change the display icons. You can add things like your ETA, your arrival time, and more.
Your route is always highlighted in a contrasting color to that of surrounding roads. Important route details, such as vehicle length limits, are displayed in a heading above the map.
The entire setup makes in-cab viewing and navigation easy. You won’t find yourself fumbling around screens.
The Garmin dezl OTR700 is available in four sizes, including 5.5-, 7,- 8-, and 10-inch displays. You have the option to add a built-in dash cam to any of the models. We recommend that you opt for a 7-inch or larger display. The larger screens keep you from straining your eyes and make it easier for you to pick up on small details.
The Garmin dezl OTR700 provides users with pertinent driving alerts, including forwarding collision, steep grades, railroad crossings, and lane departure warnings. These warnings provide drivers with welcome insight into potential hazards and obstacles that lurk ahead.
Custom Truck Routing
The Garmin dezl OTR700 enables drivers to create custom truck routes by inputting the size, load, and weight of their trucks. Truck profiles are stored in the Garmin dezl OTR700’s memory. They include finite details, including the length, width, height of your vehicle. All this information is automatically considered during navigation. As such, you can trust that you are always traveling on track routes that are well-suited for your rig and load.
We also love that the Garmin dezl OTR700 shows you popular truck routes. You have a much better chance of successfully navigating unfamiliar areas when you have insight into the most popular local truck routes. These routes are highlighted in purple.

Voice Assistance and Hands-Free Calling
While we like the fact that the Garmin dezl OTR700 comes with built-in voice assistance, the audio could benefit from some improvements. The voice is fuzzy sounding and occasionally mispronounces commonplace names.
You can also pair the Garmin dezl OTR700 with your phone to enjoy hands-free calling.
Optional PrePass Account
Garmin’s PrePass is an optional service that provides drivers with notifications regarding upcoming weigh stations and bypass decisions. PrePass must be used with a Garmin dezl OTR, the PrePass app, and an active PrePass subscription. A PrePass subscription will run you $17.65 per month. In our humble opinion, the investment is well worth it.
Another one of the Garmin dezl OTR700’s most useful features is Load-to-Dock Guidance. This feature shows you potential loading zones and storage lots at fulfillment centers and other destinations.
Garmin eLog™ compliant ELD
While the Garmin dezl OTR700 does not include a preinstalled ELD system, the large-screen version is compatible with Garmin eLog. This fully compliant ELD is a subscription-free hours of service (HOS) program. It enables drivers to avoid HOS violations and maintain transparency with fleet managers and customers.
We strongly recommend this add-on, as it will help you make the most of each of your stops and help you avoid costly penalties.
Garmin Drive App
The Garmin Drive is an essential element of the Garmin dezl OTR700 experience. This app is available for free from the Apple App Store and Google Play. It has several features and tools that are designed to make truck navigation easier. Live traffic updates keep you from wasting precious road time. You can even use the app to view footage from actual traffic cameras. Keep in mind that photoLive traffic cameras are not available everywhere. According to Garmin, there are currently more than 10,000 traffic cameras throughout the country.
Meanwhile, parking notifications keep you from playing time-consuming guessing games. Live parking information includes details such as pricing and availability of parking near your destination. Keep in mind that parking data is available for most cities. Coverage can be spotty in rural areas.
You can also use the app to sync your phone to your Garmin dezl OTR700. This way, you can receive important updates, calendar reminders, app alerts, text messages, and phone calls while obeying hands-free driving laws.
You can even use the Garmin Drive app to record and share dashcam videos. This sort of tool could potentially exonerate you from accident or incident claims.
The Garmin Drive app’s weather insights can also prove helpful to professional drivers. You get detailed weather forecasts, severe weather alerts, and animated radar imagery.
The app also provides users with real-time fuel prices. This feature makes it easy for drivers to budget their trips.
While navigation is always our biggest concern when it comes to GPS products, we didn’t want to overlook the Garmin dezl’s more nuanced tools.
This device has a built-in service history feature that lets you input the dates and details of your oil changes, brake jobs, tire rotations, and more.
You can also access your Garmin’s owner manual within the device’s “Apps” heading. Other valuable apps include “Weather Radar,” “Trip Planner,” “photoLive,” “Backup Camera,” “Smart Notifications,” and more.
All Garmin dezl OTR700s are privy to occasional map and software updates. The built-in Wi-Fi connectivity features ensure that you access updates while you are on the road. You should receive an on-screen cue when a new update is available. You can download and install the update from the comfort of your truck cab.
Keep in mind that initial setup updates do require a strong Wi-Fi connection. Depending on your Wi-Fi connection, the updates can take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour. We strongly advise that you install and update your Garmin before it is time to hit the road.
